The fact is that the cable running from the exchange to the master socket uses a twisted pair configuration - twisted pairs significantly reduce interference.

Typical DIY extension kits do not use twisted pairs (the cables are flat) and so do not offer interference protection without additional equipment.

BT charge £115 for a site visit (which covers only the 1st hours labour) to fit a new extension.
