It is possible and legal to connect your own telephone extension
to your existing internal arrangement.
When you consider the fact that your telephone line may have already
travelled thousands of metres from an exchange, that a few metres
of wiring won't make the slightest difference in the performance
of your telephone line.
The fact is that the cable running from the exchange to the master
socket uses a twisted pair configuration - twisted pairs significantly
reduce interference.
Typical DIY extension kits do not use twisted pairs (the cables
are flat) and so do not offer interference protection without additional
equipment.
BT charge £115 for a site visit (which covers only the 1st
hours labour) to fit a new extension.
